Bar Crashers Coming At Ya

We're Coming to Crash Your Bar has taken the Twin Cities by storm. Created by Kevin Ellis of Minneapolis, this random group of people will go crash one new bar each month. Anyone can come and if you join this group you will know the next destination.

The group started in Mid February from a text message sent by me to everyone that I knew in the Twin Cities. Glad to say that almost 30 people showed up at Baggan's Pub in North Minneapolis. So if 30 people showed up with little notice, think how many would show if your organized it!

Therefore, "We're Coming to Crash Your Bar" was created solely to meet new people and try out new bars. Think about it, other than work, where do you meet new people? So if one member joins and they invite 5 of their friends to join, that's 5 more people that I would have never met.

Our group had it's first official event at Mayslacks in North East Minneapolis and nearly 50 people attended. Just think of how big these groups might get when we've crashed a few more bars and more people find out about it!

The group has grown to over 100 people within a month and steadily growing as more and more people catch on to the idea and attend the events.

Twin Cities Bar Tour :: Centerfield Bar

Located in the historic Warehouse District in Downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, Centerfield’s Bar and Grill has become a Twin Cities hot spot for great food, drinks, live music and dancing. The Location, originally Fatso’s, merged with Linwood Pizza to create Centerfield in June 2008, and continues to raise the bar on how a sports bar should be run with its friendly, upbeat staff and fast service.

The bar features great burgers and the ever so popular Linwood Pizza served either tableside or from a New York Style walk up window. One of the establishment’s claims to fame is their Ultimate Burger Challenge. In this “tasteful” game, “customers are challenged to eat the 3 pound burger in 30 minutes or less,” says bar manager Josh Hansen, “If accomplished, the customer gets a free Ultimate Burger during their next visit and a picture on the bar wall!” There is also a challenge to eat a Jumbo Pizza, which is 21 inches and 4 pounds, in the same amount of time.

With Menu prices beating almost all those of downtown, Centerfield’s is an excellent place to stop in for lunch, dinner, or an after work cocktail! Happy hour specials run throughout the entire week and include: half priced appetizers on Mondays, Quarter wings after 4pm on Tuesdays, $5 wine on Wednesdays, $4 Martinis on Thursdays, free pizza buffet on Fridays, $1 off any burger on Saturdays, and $3 Jag Bombs and Bloody Mary’s on Sundays. “I love going to Centerfield,” says Ryan of Minneapolis, “Linwood Pizza has always been my favorite and now I don’t have to drive all the way down to Apple Valley to eat it!”

The atmosphere is ideal for a casual, fun night out with its high industrial style ceilings and high top tables arranged around a centrally located full service bar. Big screen TV’s lace the outer walls for a great view of the game wherever you sit in the house. On the weekends the venue features live music or a DJ show which encompasses the upbeat nightlife style of downtown Minneapolis. The music varies from night to night and is sure to always have something new pumping from its speakers. Whether you are stopping in for a game or some dancing, Centerfield’s will have what you are looking for.

On March 13th, 2009 Centerfield’s will be one of the great Twin Cities bars that help kick off the 2009 Bar Tour for ThePartier.com. ThePartier.com is launching a new bar tour throughout the Twin Cities to promote the great nightlife in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area and increase sales at local businesses in order stimulate the local economy. The website plans to co-host an event at one establishment each week by inviting partiers from around the city to visit and tour the venue.

Each participating business will have a chance to promote their bar to all attendees each week as a "Featured Host". As a "Featured Host", bars can show off their best nights with drink specials, resident DJ's and unique décor to remind partiers why they should come back.

After each event, ThePartier.com will continue to advertise and promote each participating business throughout the year. "We don’t want partiers to just go out for one night," says Brian Bozeman, an Event Coordinator, "we want them to go back every week!"

Al's Bar is still standing tall, mixed with everyday regulars and new customers on a daily basis. While they still do not accept credit cards, Al's does now offer an ATM and they still accept checks. The bar remains a classic dive, with stiff drinks, old school cash registers and a new generation of “character bartenders”. Al's Place was built in 1926 at 3912 Excelsior Blvd. This two-story establishment was originally faced with red Chicago brick. We're unsure of the original owner, but in 1927, Al J. Lovass and Mary Vlavianous obtained a license to sell soft drinks and operate a restaurant. Others remember it as a grocery store or a confectionary. Whatever was going on upstairs, bootlegger Al and his wife supplied their customers with more than pop in their basement "party room"/speakeasy that featured a large fieldstone fireplace. Al's friendship with the Sheriff ensured that he and his card playing, drinking customers were safe from prosecution. Al, of Norwegian descent, and his wife lived above the bar until they bought a house in southwest Minneapolis in the 1940's. John Reid remembers that Al wanted to sell the bar after WWII, but local attorney Heine Kuhlman talked them out of it because he knew it was a gold mine. "Heine was upset because they never gave him anything for that good advice."

In 1933 the establishment was listed as Al's Cafe in the first St. Louis Park Directory, reflecting its status before the end of prohibition the following year. The first addition, to the east, was built in 1934. This room originally had big windows so one could see the golf course, but in one misguided fit of remodeling the windows were covered over (they're still there in the wall). In 1952 the liquor store was added to the west side but closed in 1980. Because of regulations imposed by the City, the former liquor store can now only be used for storage.

Al's was an especially popular place when there was an election in Minneapolis and the Minneapolis bars were closed, since Al's was the first bar across the city line. Al's had a collection of "character bartenders:" Gar Case was a song and dance man from the old vaudeville days. He knew every joke and story ever told and liked to share them with his customers. If he started to tell a story he never quit until he finished, regardless of who was waiting for a drink. Another bartender was Knox Delaney. He had a diamond in one of his front teeth and loved to flash a big smile, especially to the ladies, so you could see the diamond.

Al's never closed because of inclement weather. During the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940, people walked on top of cars to find refuge at Al's, where they partied for 3-4 days. Al cashed checks, and opened at 8 a.m. to accommodate third shift workers who were just getting off work. Al's also strove to be a good neighbor by buying up adjacent lots as a buffer between the bar and nearby houses.
